German Society for the other succulents (Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten e.V.) FGaS

Working group of German Cacti Society (Deutschen Kakteengesellschaft e.V.)

Unlike cacti, the subject of the other succulents plays a secondary rule in botany and also with plant lovers although it is not less interesting and is more multifaceted. To remedy this and share knowledge some friends of succulent plants got together and founded our group at the beginning of the 80s of last century.
The society was founded in Leipzig in 1990. Today it has more than 300 members from all over the world but mainly from Germany. The aim of the society is to tackle scientific questions in the field of Succulents, except cacti, the development of methods to cultivate the plants successfully and to promote knowledge about the taxonomy, cultural needs and propagation of these plants. We aim to promote science as well as education and knowledge (please download our constitution).
The society publishes the member’s journal "Avonia" (formerly "Die anderen Sukkulenten") and a free paper "Avonia-News". Avonia is published four times a year in full colour (three issues up to 2007) in format 155 x 230 mm. Ask for a free copy to have a look to the quality and contents.
The Membership fee is currently 35 € for members living outside of Germany.
Once a year the annual meeting takes place. You can participate and attend lectures and the general meeting.
Part of our society are also special groups (IG) “Euphorbia”, “Aloaceae”, “Yucca and other open-air succulents" and '”Asclepiadaceae”. The groups organize their own meetings. These groups, seed distribution and other institutions are accessible for members.
